Advancing People Skills & Relations

As requested, this month stays focused on building more leadership skills. As a leader (one who guides or influences the work of others), people skills and relationships are critical to team performance and engagement.  Good relations prevent problems from occurring and recurring!

The Benefits of Better Relations

Get These Benefits by Using These 6 Leadership Principles*:

1) TREAT PEOPLE AS INDIVIDUALS.

  • They are different and it affects them on the job.
  • With consistent applications of team and organzation policies.

2) BE DECENT.

  • Treat each member fairly.
  • With the respect and dignity that everyone deserves.

3) LET EACH TEAM MEMBER KNOW HOW THEY ARE DOING.

  • What is expected vs. performance.
  • Together, identify ways to help them improve.

  • 4) GIVE CREDIT WHEN DUE.
  • Look for extra or unusual performance.
  • Tell the person while it's “hot”.

5) TELL TEAM MEMBERS IN ADVANCE ABOUT CHANGES THAT WILL AFFECT THEM.

  • Tell them both what and why, if possible.
  • Work with them to accept the change.

6) MAKE THE BEST USE OF EACH TEAM MEMBER'S ABILITY.

  • Look for abilities not now being used. Provide growth opportunities.
  • Never stand in a person's way.
  • Good relations with each team member come from an environment with clear responsibilities, transferring knowledge / skills / abilities, and creating the setting.
