Implementing Changes So They Stick: Is it Trick or Treat?

Chris Bujak • September 15, 2021

TRICKS

Ever have any of these problems when rolling out your improvements or changes?

  • The change did not become part of the new way of doing things.
  • Large and unexpected resistance to the change.
  • Results did not achieve the performance demonstrated during the testing of the solution.
  • Performance falls off rather that continually improving.

TREATS

IMPLEMENTATION is a key part of the improvement cycle!

After problem solving, testing of the solutions, and learning from the initial application, implementation is key to getting the treats from all your hard work.

Done well, implementation should result in a smooth handoff to the work process owners and individual contributors, measurable improvements for all stakeholders, ownership of the new way, and ongoing improvements, see some successes.

Implementation does not simply happen by itself and takes some attention to a set of basic steps and tasks in order to be successful. How have you been doing? Can you check off these steps and tasks?

  1. The Improvement is reliable, standardized and with clear accountabilities for use, learn more?
  2. Everyone has been taught the new process effectively (using a Tell, Show, Do, Recycle approach)?
  3. Measure and targets are defined and operationalized? Performance is tracked, learn more?
  4. A feedback mechanism for questions and ideas (“Huddles”) is created to regularly review performance, collectively solve resulting problems and focus on incrementally improving?
  5. Performance coaching is provided; giving positive feedback and addressing gaps (individually and as a team), learn more?
